What the circular actually requires
The Ministry of Education and CBSE launched the computational thinking and AI curriculum for Classes 3 to 8 on 1 April 2026, effective from the 2026-27 academic session.
The structure differs by class band. For Classes 3 to 5, the approach is embedded computational thinking, delivered through worksheets, puzzles and integration within regular subjects, at 50 hours a year.
For Classes 6 to 8, it advances to a combination of computational thinking, artificial intelligence and project based learning, delivered through interdisciplinary work and dedicated AI modules, at 100 hours a year.
The framing aligns with NEP 2020.
Why the syllabus is the easy part
Which textbook, which vendor, which periods in the timetable. These questions get asked first because they have answers you can buy.
The harder question is who teaches it.
Consider the position of a Class 6 teacher in the 2026-27 session. She is delivering a hundred hours a year on a subject nobody taught her. The students in front of her have been using these tools since Class 4, unsupervised, and several of them more fluently than the adults in the building.
That is a difficult room to hold, and no textbook resolves it.
The curriculum asks for dispositions, not topics
Look closely at what the curriculum is actually for. Structured thinking. Problem solving. Ethical awareness around AI.
None of those are topics that can be delivered from a page. They are dispositions, and a teacher can only build in children what she has built in herself.
A teacher who is uncertain about her own AI judgment cannot credibly teach children to evaluate AI output. A teacher who has never had to decide whether an AI answer is trustworthy cannot teach that decision.
Which places staff capability ahead of vendor selection in the sequence, rather than after it.
The part schools are underestimating in their favour
There is a genuinely encouraging fact here that gets lost in the procurement conversation.
Your teachers are not starting from nothing.
A teacher who has spent fifteen years working out how children misunderstand fractions, and how to correct that without discouraging them, already holds most of what this curriculum is asking her to teach. She has been teaching structured thinking her entire career. She has been modelling problem solving in every lesson where something did not work and she adapted.
She has just never had to name it.
What she needs is not a course in artificial intelligence. She needs language for what she already does, and a method for applying that judgment to a tool she did not grow up with.
That is a substantially smaller problem than most schools are budgeting for, and it responds to a different kind of training.
What effective preparation looks like
Start with a diagnostic, not a workshop. Find out where your staff actually are before deciding what to buy. A six question self assessment run in a staff meeting takes ten minutes and produces a clearer picture than any vendor consultation. There is one at the end of why AI training in schools fails.
Train judgment, not operation. The distinction between functional literacy, operating the tool, and critical literacy, questioning it, comes from an integrative review of 124 AI literacy studies presented at ACM ICER in 2025. Almost all school AI training delivers only the first, which is why so little changes six weeks later.
Practise on real work. Teachers should apply the method to the assessment they are actually setting next week, not to an invented example. Transfer from invented examples is poor.
Sequence it before the curriculum lands. A teacher who has spent a term using AI with method, on her own lesson planning, arrives at the CT and AI curriculum with lived experience of the judgments it asks her to teach. This is the reasoning behind the IMPACTS framework, which structures those judgments into seven repeatable steps.
A realistic timeline
For a school implementing in 2026-27, the useful order is:
Diagnose staff capability. Build teacher AI judgment through their own work. Select curriculum resources. Prepare subject specific delivery. Then teach.
Most schools are running that list backwards, starting with resource selection, which produces a well stocked programme delivered by staff who are one page ahead of the class.
A hundred hours a year is a great many periods to fill that way.
